Carrera's presentation is great. Voluntary submission to judgment by community upon threat of the community simply expelling you is a wonderful negative rights legal system. It beats the positive rights "this court shall judge those it chooses to judge" by degrees. I've yet to meet the libertarian that can tell me why the courthouse down the street has the ability to force its judgments upon me. As Spooner said, "ahem, did I sign that consitution?"

    i second hl.

antigua is certainly a far nicer place to live than that violent shithole, guatemala city. that's probably more a function of the population than the legal code, however.

it would be nice to hear more about the latifundia problem in latin america, a legacy of the spanish colonial model whose impact is still strongly felt. sadly, reformers south of the border generally wear the che guevara, and not the turgot t-shirt.

it'd be nice to hear more about costa rica, too, and how it's colonial period differed from its neighbours, to its great benefit. what about a celebration of its abolition of the army, doesn't that merit more celebration?

more contributors from francisco marroquín, please!
