The Spanish Ham issue
It seems that Jamon.com has been working hard for decades to overcome the barriers to importing Spanish hams, and the road for some ham types was cleared about a year ago. It is not easy and it involves deposits and waits and other obstacles. It is not click and eat. And the price is about twice what you pay in Spain. And the supplies are very limited and it seems rather monopolistic. And the best possible variety isn't available. But it is getting there.

I must say that the prices at Amazon for Jamon are "Congressional" - $49 for 4oz !

I see a new version of the movie Blow at hand, except it will be called Iberico. A very well dressed man of the world flies Cessna airplanes just over the waves and under the radar. His cargo? $50/oz merriment for the masses. Bravo.

All this ham talk reminds me of the time, I tried to sneak in some bananas from India. There was this extremely good-looking female agent from the Department of Agriculture with a Beagle dog that was simply adorable. The dog was all over my bag and that made me feel very nice, because it was cute. They stole my bananas but left me feeling extremely pleasant.
Meanwhile I was eye balling some of the things that they seized from my fellow co-passengers – rice, coriander leaves, curry leaves, mustard seeds, fennel seeds and of course fruits. How un-necessarily wasteful.
I suppose they where in a mood to clamp down that day. I know people who have passed without much scrutiny. The law is inconsistently enforced.
