Mises Economics Blog

Happy Birthday LvMI

August 24, 2009 8:55 AM by Douglas French (Archive)

The Mises Institute was founded 27 years ago today. It started on a shoe-string of a budget to become the world leading source for education in the Austrian School of economics and libertarian political theory.

It's also become, rather inadvertently, a major publisher in the liberal tradition generally, with 300 plus books in our catalog. It's something that had to be done, and even though we have a small staff and few resources, someone had to step up and do what was necessary. The store is a service we are pleased to provide and we are grateful to you for helping us in this project. Buying here is a way of supporting the Mises Institute.

You can see all such events at our Google Calendar, which you can also add to your own personal calendar. You can discover, for example, that August 24 is also the day that the White House was burned by British forces in 1814.

LVMI changed my entire perspective on political, philosophical, and economic matters. Thank you; one can only hope that current trends help people to educate themselves and understand the validity of Austrian economics. Cheers.

That above comment might seem a bit obscure. It is an inside joke. The LaRouchies have long said that the Mises Institute was established as a front for the Queen of England's underground drug running operation, and hence the advocacy of drug legalization.

Not explaining, just reporting the facts.

Happy Birthday to the Ludwig von Mises Institute. The information provided within the site by the many extermely intelligent contributors to the periodicals, lectures, articles, and so forth created a life changing experience for yours truly since 2003. Not only did it provide a significant shift intellectually, but I would venture to state that the person that I was no longer exists in many respects.

Observing its significant progression even since happening upon this site six years ago has been a mind-opening and exiting experience. May this institution be remembered as the primary institgator of the spread of liberty for those hungry for it.

No, really? Geez, even if true, it seems like a dubious way of achieving drug legalization.

    Tucker,

I kind of wish that was true. There couldn't be a better front for a drug running organization, especially one ran by a State. Doesn't LaRouche and his loonies know that LvMI is full of anarchists who would laugh if the Queen of anything asked them to do something.

    ps. Happy Birthday von pride!

OMG, that story about the LaRouche's is the funniest thing I've ever heard.

    Three cheers for LvMI!

I was in the first crop of Mises Fellows and my life was changed dramatically for the better as a result.

Thanks Lew and Burt and the donors who made it possible.

However, let it be said that if the Queen's underground drug-running operation wants to give us a donation, who are we to say no?

Happy Birthday Greetings To The Mises Institute!

I always considered myself as part of the second crop which probably makes sense since I was not a Mises Fellow, just a fellow student in Austrian economics at Auburn at the same time as Mark Thornton.

When the Mises Institute was still in diapers in a tiny building in the parking lot of the football stadium I was likewise just barely learning to walk (process thoughts like a classical liberal).

Now the Mises Institute is fully mature and its powers of intellect are fully developed. It will have to take on the frivilous and reckless ego-driven interventionists but through perserverence and fortitude ("Do not give in to evil, but proceed ever more boldly against it.") knowledge will flow and the market process will bloom.

I loved the little insight provided today by Lew Rockwell about the early unsurpassed band of collaborators: Margit von Mises, Murray N. Rothbard, Ron Paul, F.A. Hayek, and Hans F. Sennholz.

Although 27, the candles of liberty and peace that have been lit around the world are now a conflagration that no wind can blow out! I sure hope you receive many birthday gifts!

    Tucker,

What's interesting is that almost all drug dealers and drug cartels have no interest in supporting legalization of their product, because prices would drop dramatically, and all of the barriers of entry that now exist for getting into the drug trade would be gone. In effect governments criminalization of drugs has created monopolistic conditions for drug dealers, and they like it that way, that is until they're in jail.
