The Rothbard Flask: is it your thing?

May 19, 2009 9:37 AM by Jeffrey Tucker (Archive)

THIS ITEM IS IN THE STORE

We all have a good feeling about this but before we place an order, we want to gauge the level of interest. What do you think about this item as a way of fighting the new prohibitionism? It says "Enemy of the State." The size is 8 oz. and it will be in the $18 range.

I will certainly be buying one seeing that any alcohol consumption on my part is against the state, me being 20, and though I can do everything else the state and its thugs continue to disallow me from freely purchasing and consuming alcohol. It will be perfect for bringing my Jameson to parties and will hopefully create a lot of conversation starters about Rothbard and Mises.org

I'm going to go against the grain on this one and say I have no intention whatsoever to buy this. I also would not buy the "Rothbard revolver" or "Hayek bong" or anything else of this nature being suggested by other responders. I have extremely little money as it is, and what little money I do have I wish to spend on books.

With that said, I do think the idea is cool. If there is demand for it, go for it.

    Cheers,

I do think the flask idea is great. I don't want to sound like a douche...and a party pooper, but some of you guys that are asking for some bizarre items, I don't think have thought it through...hopefully most you are just kidding. Seriously...A BONG with Rothbard or Mises?

The flask, I think is as far as Mises.org should go.

Good stuff, and I concur about the bong idea. Also, consider putting Rothbard's name on this flask.

I drink pretty rarely -- and have never owned a flask in my life -- but I would buy one for those rare occasions when I do want to take some "Virginia Gentleman" bourbon with me to sporting events, especially UVA and Ole Miss football games. And I would buy several for my friends. It would be a great addition to the Mises Institute online store.

Let's think about this for more than five second. As much as I'm sure some of our pot-smoking friends would enjoy a LvMI bong, how would marketing such an item make the Austrian School look to the defenders of Establishment "economics"? They'll just say, "See? Austrians are a bunch of dope-heads. That's why they stupidly cling to these antequated concepts of market liberalism. That's why they fail to recognise that Keynesianism saved us from the Great Depression."

Now I'll readily grant that such an argument would be specious, and that one can be both a recreational marijuana consumer and have a top-notch scientific mind. But nevertheless we must all admit that this is the sort of anti-Austrian propoganda we would see emerge. I would never personally reject the Austrian school nor the LvMI for the sale of such an item, but I generally think it a bad idea.

    Respectfully,
    Alex Peak
