An uptick in the housing market
Zillow.com is a neat website that bills itself as "a free online real estate site where you can search for homes for sale, find home prices, see home values, view recently sold homes, and check mortgage rates." I occasionally go to Zillow to see how home prices have fallen throughout the US. While the nation in general is experiencing falling prices, Washington, DC experienced a noticeable uptick since the inauguration. What's odd is this: How is the seat of our altruistic public service generating all that wealth? Hmmm.

A leftist will contribute this to the fascistic city government of Washington DC, and then he will propose all of America become fascist... err I mean "fair." A neoconservative will contribute this to the fact that Washington DC effectively raids the rest of the country, and then he will propose that the way to make America prosperous is to invade Mexico, enslave their people, and use their national resources.

I'm sorry but are you stating that everyone who lives in Washington DC is a public servant. I'm not sure when's the last time you've lived in DC but walk down K-Street and I see nothing but high end lobbyist working to get their objectives accomplished.
Also you are taking a brief look from 05Jan to 09Jan, without comparing to any other major city, NYC, LA, Vegas, Miami, if you compare to other markets and see their rise comparable to DC market prices in % and then the their respective decrease you will see a pattern.

KP,
You can poke around a bit, but I have not found a city with an uptick this year.
Certainly, they are not all public servant -- I never made that claim. They are all supposed to be serving the public. Isn't that the supposed intent of government, no matter who receives the tax funds?

I am a "public servant" (luckily for one of the few useful/needed government agencies, otherwise I'd be looking for a transfer) living in the DC area.
It's no joke that the region is also largely propped up by wealthy dirt bag lobbyists (the worst scum), lawyers, and of course politicians. There is a good amount of IT in the area too, but they're mostly working for the government. (Shocking!) At least they aren't criminals like the other crowd, I guess.
I don't really doubt the "uptick", I'm seeing a lot of houses for sale but also a lot of "sold" signs, and the prices are still sky high. Lower than a year ago, but still outrageous. 2br condos for 1/2 mill+? Where is this money coming from? (As if that has to be asked!) There are layoffs happening here, but my unscientific guess is that there hasn't been too much unemployment locally.
So none of this is really surprising to me. Does anyone here really doubt that money is being funnelled into DC at the expense of the rest of the country? I sure don't. To be fair, the area *has* been effected by the downturn a little. But compared to elsewhere? heh

Pirates And All Of Their Loot Cannot Stop The Cause Of Liberty.
When the pirate ships come to port there is always alot of activity and an uptick.
The same is true at the places where the loot taken by taxation comes to rest. Look at the State capitals like Madison and Des Moines and Harrisburg and Sacramento, and look at Washington, D.C.
Pirates do not need ships and guns. All they need is the coercive force of the State. Who is going to rescue the poor captives, us, the hostages of a socialist/fascist State?
The cause of liberty is a great force, powerful enough to cause the pirates to scurry, but it needs our help to educate people about classical liberalism while the awesome forces of equilibrium destroy the pirate clans. Then even their parrot will no longer be able to spew the pirate propaganda!
Some of the pirates are hoping to return to the site of their buried treasures but most of them will be hunted down by the victims of their economic terrorism long before they reach the desert island. Those that do make it there will be able to count their funny money as many times as they want while perishing alone and shunned.

Looting by the federal government and many state governments has now become open and brazen. Wage increases for government workers, many of them political appointees, in the face of double digit unemployment, speaks volumes for the contempt of government for the hapless taxpayers.

Jim Fedako,
I never said there was an uptick but merely stating that the rise in prices seen in Washington DC compared to rises say in Las Vegas, Miami and Arizona show a similar trend in rise and fall. The % gain in cities like LasVegas, and Miami shows a greater % increase and % decrease than in Washington DC.
My point is that you are loosely basing that all the housing in Washington DC is in fact owned by "public servants", where the metropolitan city houses multiple private universities, hospitals and corporations.
All I'm stating is that the variation in prices in a city can reflect the demand in that area, as well as untold number of other factors.

Zillow now starts charging for leads, and lenders probably won't be too happy about it. There's a full coverage by TechCrunch: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/06/zillow-starts-charging-for-leads-will-lenders-retaliate/
