The billion is the new million

February 7, 2009 11:13 AM by Jim Fedako (Archive)

Not too long ago, a billion dollars was a big deal -- something to stop and consider. Now the billion's site value has been reduced by three zeroes. Today's Columbus Dispatch has this headline: State revenue falls further than expected, Ohio has $85 billion gap so far this fiscal year. Of course, the budget gap is really $85 million, but editors are so used to seeing billions when discussing budgets that this slip passed their pens. Amazing how the word billion has been deflated in such a short time.

Maybe it is wishful thinking! If it was $85 billion then the State would have no chance of camoflauging itself and would be forced to tell everyone immediately that it is bankrupt because it follows the bankrupt ideas of Keynesianism.

Ohio, be truthful and get rid of the shackles of useless bureaucracy. Declare bankruptcy and disband all government except what the people choose to do voluntarily. Quickly virtue will replace vice!

It really is amazing how money is losing its value and no one seems to notice. Not too many years ago billion because the new million. Do people not notice the trend or do they just not understand what it means?
