Playing cards and drinking tea

January 29, 2009 10:51 PM by Jim Fedako (Archive)

The US Post Office wants to reduce its work week by a day. Hey, why not stay home every day of the week and let the private sector deliver the mail? And, why not invite the folks over at Homeland Securty to join you for lazy days on the porch, playing cards and drinking tea. Wouldn't we all be better off?

Hey, why not just stay home and let the private sector deliver the mail?

Ha, when I first heard this news story, somebody in the story (probably a politician, I don't remember for sure) expressed a fear of that very thing: that businesses would turn to private delivery. A lot of politicians, media talking heads, and fans of socialism would soil themselves if that happened.

Wow. Yet another reason to hate the post office. It blows my mind why the USPS is still in existence. What a waste of resources.

Since the Post Office is really there primarily to distribute Social Security checks and the other welfare service payments of the government, and since those are pre-scheduled I suggest that the Post Office only work on those few days each month. Think how much money the Post Office could save!

The rest of the time the mail could be distributed by private firms and after a month or two efficiencies hitherto unknown to the public will come to the surface. Everyone will be much better off!

All it would take is the repeal of the First Class monopoly.

Once that is accomplished, the USPS can compete just like any other service.

Let them try. Show us their "quality" and economy of scale.

I am always puzzled when conservatives decry a (Democratic) congressman's excessive vacation or missed votes. Would that they all took excessive vacations and missed more votes! Better to pay them to do nothing than to have them doing damage.
