Stossel's Guide to Politics

October 20, 2008 8:57 PM by Jeffrey Tucker (Archive)

I'm really enjoying John Stossel's Guide to Politics. Here is part one, which advances a late Hayekian view of social order. Particularly impressive is part two, which takes a sound position on the bailout, even as it takes a rather superficial view on the cause. In general, it is a good link to shoot to someone who is confused. Part three is great too. Oh, just watch the whole thing.

In some ways, it is hard to know how to judge this material. As economics, it is analytically thin. Even so, it is better than the usual fare on mainline television, and it is pretty amazing that this appeared on ABC, though some affiliates refused to carry it. Thank you Liberty Student.

Some affiliates refused to carry it? Just goes to show you how true it really is.

Affiliate means what - affiliated with the unConstitutional coup, perhaps!

What a well done piece of informative reporting. I have always liked John Stossel, but that piece on Fema and what it took to build a house in New Orleans was worth its weight in gold! Hilarious (and sad!).

The part on skating (part 1/6, 6'') is indeed an interesting common sense illustration and explanation of the Hayekian spontaneous order. Very nice.

I saw only one problem with the part re: housing bubble. He didn't mention the Federal Reserve once.

One part I thought was funny and a bit unsettling was when he was taking some politicians to task on farm subsidies and he asked something to the effect of, "Why not subsidies for clothes and shoes?" One of them responded: "You don't want to push us."

"You don't want to push us."

I had to go back several times and make sure I heard that correctly. There are very few times politicians let their real hatred show, this is one of them.

Yes, sadly the Federal Reserve was not mentioned. But Stossel also did an interview with Ron Paul, available only on YouTube because ABC refused to air it.

I think it is time for Stossel to really role up his sleeves. How about he takes on the legalized counterfeiter institutions we have in the modern economy - Banks and Government. How about he really explains the fraudulant nature of the monetary system and what it does to distort the market through inflation and malinvestments. Let's see how many affiliates will refuste to carry it then.
