Mises Economics Blog

New Template

You have probably noticed that the new template is making its way around the site, and problems related formatting will be legion for months. Please post on the forum here with problems and issues.

  • I am using a not very recent Mozilla browser under Linux.

With this, the default type size is too large - far too large in these posting windows - which makes browsing awkward by using up so much "screen real estate" that you cannot see enough at once and have to work by scrolling and remembering what you saw just before (right now I can only see "screen real estate" to "I can").

Over to the right, under Mises Store, "Causes of the Economic Crisis by Mises" is too far up to see, but it is a decent size. Under Betrayal Live Blog, "Anthony Gregory" is just on screen if I scroll properly, and it is a decent size. Just about everything else... either too big or far too big.

[I just tried the preview for this post; it looks as though the template hasn't been installed there yet, as everything is still a decent size. Right now I can see from the first "estate" down to here.]

  • I'm using Firefox 3 (beta 4) on Win XP Pro.

For me, this change is a huge improvement for reading articles. The most important improvement is that the very distracting gray shading in the right margin of the main text no longer appears with larger font sizes, which is a huge readability improvement for Firefox browsers.

However the default font probably should be at least 1 size smaller, per the preceding person's comments. (I often zoom up the font at the end of very long days, but that's easy, plus I have very high-res monitor, so that may not be optimal for more typical readers. So long as the previously mentioned problem doesn't reappear upon zooming, I'd be very happy with a smaller default font.)

One thing that would still be very helpful would be if the primary text column were to adjust in width (and the text reflow) according to window size (as LRC articles do), so that you could widen and narrow it, without making the right hand link column scroll sideways off the edge. (Select a discussion thread on www.slashdot.com for an approximate example of this behavior.)

    Thanks much!

  • on the Media section, I could not find the
button/link to hit to display media items sorted
    by date

A sort by date feature is very useful
