Mises Economics Blog

A preview of the new Mises.org look

March 13, 2008 4:00 AM by Aristotle Esguerra | Other posts by Aristotle Esguerra | Comments (18)

You may have noticed a minor change in the layout of the Mises.org blog homepage. This is a preview of what the rest of the blog (and, indeed, the rest of Mises.org) will look like.

Additional functionality (including support for more social bookmarks) will be better integrated, blog navigation will be easier and more consistent, and more bugs will be squashed.

Constructive criticism is welcomed and all reasonable suggestions for improvements will be considered. Also, you may find bugs that my eyes overlooked; please alert me to them via e-mail at aristotle@mises.com.

  • I like the look, but it's too "chunky" - the text is too big (on the blog main page; it's OK in the comment view), the sidebar too wide (by maybe 10-15%), and (again, on the main page) there are no margins.

  • I hate it! Just kidding, it's fabulous. I'm just giving a preview of what 90% of all people say about a new layout.

  • I find the size of the print to be fine. Once you pass 40 and have to move on to reading glasses, you are grateful to anyone who uses a larger typeface. : )

I also like the fact that the home page isn't quite so "busy".

  • That's a relief. The old page looked a bit rustic.

  • It looks good.

    Two points:
    1) The "Tu Ne Cede Malis" looks out of place. Maybe you could stick it under the coat of arms, since that's where mottos usually go. Also, are the last three words supposed to be capitalized?

    2) "Advancing the scholarship of liberty in the tradition of the Austrian School" is not a sentence, so it shouldn't end with a period.

  • I like the new layout overall, but have a couple minor complaints.

The article and title fonts don't play nicely with Opera's minimum font size setting. I have my min font size set to 15 to deal with the small fonts on so many websites out there. However, it seems that Opera uses this size as the base for all relative font sizes; so the article title (an h1 tag in the html) is scaled to 400% of 15, or 60, which is huge. Maybe a fixed font size would work better?

Another small thing is with the Recent Comments sidebar. The author, comment text, and title are all the same color and seem to run together. I liked how the old layout separated them a bit more.

  • Looks pretty good, but in IE, there's no left margin--the text is right against the left border.

  • Perhaps a little too much white space. How about boxes around each individual post and a darker background for them?

  • I use MSN explorer, which has the same issues as IE (okay, it's a little nicer). As Michael pointed out, there is no left margin and so the text is literally mashed against the edge of my monitor.

  • The Mises crest intruding on the link bar does not look quite tidy. Perhaps you could let it breathe in its own space.

  • So far the best I've seen in terms of classical elegance.

An important reserve for readability though:
optically, the larger headlines seem to stick to the upper article rather than the lower, that's because the subtile causes additional separation space.

Either the blank space over the headline should be slightly increased (my suggestion) or the subtitle impact reduced.

  • Looks good.

Just one complaint: The website does seem to be a little too wide in the main page and the Daily Article page. It causes the horizontal scroll bar to appear. On the main page, just a little bit of the right side is obscured by the vertical scroll bar. More seems to be cut off on the Daily Article page. When I try to print them, words on the far right side get cut off.

  • The other day when I looked at this column, the page looked different. Now the text for the comments is really small and the comments tend to run together.

  • Thank you to all who have contributed constructive feedback on the revision. Most of the heavy lifting has been done on the blog; there are only a few items that require attention at this point and will be addressed on an ongoing basis.

And, in response to this comment: Apologies for the comment formatting; hopefully the text size is satisfactorily large now. In any case, rest assured that while the comment preview may temporarily look different, no programs have been or shall be employed to further dorkify the content of anyone's comments.
