Justice Prevails (At Least Regarding Chicken Salad)

January 12, 2008 10:04 AM by Thomas E. Woods (Archive)

Some of you may remember Jeff Tucker's rightly indignant post about the woman (who calls herself "the chicken salad chick") who made delicious chicken salad out of her home, only to be ratted out by a competitor and forced to close up shop. Well, she now has her own store front, and I suspect she's going to make that competitor regret starting all this in the first place.

Good for her! I had hoped she wouldn't use up all her money getting embroiled in a legal battle and that she would instead (one way or another) get the capital needed to meet the competition head on!

    She's one smart chick! :)

This is good news. It's too bad that the lesson learned most people who hear about this will be that it's best to follow rules without question, regardless of how harmful those rules happen to be.

No, the lesson is go ahead and do what you want, and worry about the legal stuff afterwards. Of course, you have to be rather gutsy to take that attitude, but it seems to be the only way to be a success in business. Excessive regulations encourage a lack of respect for the laws.

Sounds like the competitor successfully forced her to incur the same higher costs that result from state economic/health & safety regulations.

Not really, since she had been planning to do this anyway. Yes, she has to deal with the bureaucracy, but on the other hand she can make a lot more chicken salad.

Well, it has certainly been a fun and exciting venture to get The Chicken Salad Chick going full tilt. I certainly appreciate the comments and insight that each of you has contributed to this blog. The early success has been more than I could have ever imagined and I look to build on this in the coming days, weeks, and months. After selling out completely on the first day of business we doubled our production for the second day and came within a few pounds of selling out then. It seems that the sky is the limit. Please keep up the chatter. Thanks again for the comments and come by to see us and taste " the best chicken salad around"
