A relentless theme in the commentary on Ron Paul is that he is not really a Republican, mainly because he dissents from the party on foreign policy. People now associate the Republican Party with crazed war mongering, massive military spending, and relentless conflict seeking, to the point even of a messianic global crusade on behalf of American imperial control.

one of the reasons the 50's are so idealized in our culture and by conservatives is because it showed what we could be when there was no war! only because we were lucky enough to have a veteran as president for a little while did we have that idylic time, however brief.

I think it just further reinforces what Murray Rothbard said about the Old Right having classical liberal traditions, not that awful 'conservatism' that Russell Kirk and Buckley et al dreamed up.
