Global Warming: How Scholastic Publishing Gets 'Em Young

December 17, 2007 10:16 AM by N. Joseph Potts (Archive)

The Science and Public Policy Institute carries this report on a book on global warming for schoolchildren written by Film Director Laurie David and published by Scholastic Publishers, the producers of such staples for American schoolchildren as the Weekly [News] Reader.

The book, titled The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming, not only recounts all the statist hype about the impending cataclysm, but contains a vital outright misrepresentation (read: inversion) of the records of atmospheric carbon dioxide versus temperature over the past 650,000 years as presented in a scientific article by Urs Siegenthaler.

Siegenthaler's study reported the lenths of time (centuries) by which increases in global temperature preceded increases in global CO2 concentrations. In Scholastic's book, however, the report has magically become one of how the CO2 was first, and the temperature followed! I went and checked out Siegenthaler's study (available on the Web only to academic subscribers, as far as I know), and it is just as SPPI reports.

This is how the education establishment helps us raise our children to be good (global) citizens.

This article is now part of the "Criticism" section of David's Wikipedia article.

We'll see how long it lasts.

Also remember she produced Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth". All that Seinfeld money is doing quite some harm to humanity!

Joe, SPPI is exactly right here, except that the error, while a big one, is probably both an error rather than a misrepresentation and is certainly not a "vital" one - if it was, the whole world would all be gladly backing away from concern over changes in climate, instead of gathering resolve to take action.

Global warming is a religious phenomenon so much like End-times prophesying that the two are nearly indistinguishable. See, http://www.jesus-on-taxes.com/Page.html

Ned, here is where you are wrong: Global warming alarmists are trying to stop a cataclysm. "End-timers" want the world to end to fulfill their god's will.

Actually, both kinds of end-timers are preaching salvation by becoming believers and rejecting the worldly goods and delights.

The difference is that modern-day end-timers are quite willing to use violence to "save" the others.

    Averros is correct.

TT: "the error, while a big one, is probably both an error rather than a misrepresentation and is certainly not a "vital" one"

The "error" is an obvious marketing tactic. There is an easy million converted believers right there.
