The New York Times Management: Not as Smart as You

September 19, 2007 8:16 AM by Jeffrey Tucker (Archive)

So the Times has stopped charging for most of its web content. The reason? "Many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYTimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to get access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue."

But you knew this years ago!

Now not only can I make fun of Thomas Friedman, but I can link to his (free) articles as well.

Thomas Friedman is one of many liberal hawks, in the media and elsewhere, who supported the Iraq war, based upon the same principles that caused them to support warfare and military interventionism during the Clinton administration.

The executive editor of the New York Times, Bill Keller, was also a liberal supporter of the Iraq war, and the Times was a principle provider "information" about Iraq's alleged WMDs.

As for the NYT website, I found, not too long ago, that they seemed to have added past articles there, even from the 1980s. Are those going to be made available, free of charge, as well?

Another thought I had, when seeing this news here, is that I wish the NYT would stop requiring registration, to read many of their free articles.

That's what they did, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks six years ago (i.e. - removed the registration requirement for accessing articles), but they said that was a temporary thing.

Incidentally, it was also from the Mises Blog that I found out about BugMeNot.com (it was a parenthetical reference, in one of the past entries here, as an alternative to registering, to read the article referenced). Thank you for your coverage of web-related issues, at this blog.
