Truth in a Piston
There was never any absolute necessity for the machine, writes Garet Garrett. Life could exist without it, only, of course on a much smaller tapestry. It is use that creates the necessity for the machine. The scientific use of physical and mechanical knowledge to increase both the agricultural and the industrial means of life has made it possible in our time to sustain on the earth a population that could not otherwise exist, that would otherwise have perished before it was born. This is a fact we keep forgetting. It is the fact that relates human life to science in a vital sense. FULL ARTICLE

I like the theory of Gaia, the earth being a living being, and that humanity is at the leading edge of her evolutive strategy. With our machines/technology we can prevent an incoming comet from destroying the earth if it were ever coming directly at her. Our cerebral cortex, supposedly the fastest evolving organic entity in Nature is now, mostly thru the Internet, weaving a harmonic cerebral cortex overtone for humanity, a network of minds communicating, searching, learning, evolving, and creating together on behalf of Gaia. Yes, we are still a tribal warfare planet and have some growing up to do, but hey, it always takes time to sort out our toys and grow up.

This article obtusely addresses the dirty secret that the environmentally minded cohorts of Al Gore hide from us: constraining industry will lower the carrying capacity of the earth. The result will be death on an enormous scale. They know this, but of course they are planning to survive while you die. I am opposed to the likes of Al Gore not because I don't care about the earth, but rather because I care about human beings. I am not in favor of any plan that will result in misery and death.

Where is Garet Garett today, when we really need him?
Imagine that, a public figure who rejected the frauds of war and radical environmentalism, both the fraud of George Bush, John McCain, et al. and the fraud of Al Gore, Ralph Nader et al.
Garet Garett reminds us of what a free press can do in preserving civilization. He also shows us how far we have to go to recover what we have lost.
A few more journalists like Mr. Garrett would certainly come in handy today!

Thank you! The truth of man and machinery so eloquently expressed! Garret mentioned that people often don't know the science of what invention they made until long after they made it, and more needs to be done to improve or expand it's abilities. This is like the science of economics. No one could really explain how the European miracle occurred, or even much of the industrial revolution, until long after it occurred. And no one really got the theory right until the birth of Austrian economics. So the machinery of the market was revolutionary and only the past 150 years was the science of economics forming to explain it's logic. The real question for our movement is, how do we expose and discredit the Utopian fanatics, alchemists, and heretics, who think they are above the science of economics, and work to keep their sectarian shrine, called government, in the hearts of the people??
