Democrats are still in the back pockets of corporations

November 13, 2006 12:23 PM by Angelo Mike | Other posts by Angelo Mike | Comments (4)

Despite Democrats claiming to be against Republican corporate shills and to be for the working people, fighting monopoly power, and not being beholden to the special interests, Nancy Pelosi has said that she wants every American to have access to broadband internet by 2010. With the police power making sure this happens, of course.

  • Certainly this kind of legisltion, depending on how it's passed, has the potential to promote one broadband company over another. And, yes, by supporting this, it by definition favors X companies over Y companies - but I don't see how that equates to Democrats being 'owned' by corporations. Surely it is obvious that the motivations for this is not to give one industry a leg-up - but rather to give consumers and small businesses access to the most efficiency-creating medium ever created (by Al Gore). Imagine the the positive long-run effects on education this could have.... Plus, some economists seem to think that access to pornography in and of itself decreases rape - I don't - but that would be another great reason for it.

  • I thought Angelo was referring to the most powerful corporation in the U.S.: the Federal Government. As to the long-term effects, they're no concern of mine. At least not to the point of using theft and violence in their pursuit.

  • Even though it's right there in the article, I should have added that Democrats will consequently be controlling how many immigrants can get visas to work in computer programming related jobs, as well as preventing the right of websites to charge people for their content, artificially insulating less efficient companies from more efficient ones.

    Oh well.

  • How many times must the Mises institute point out that both parties are in the pockets of special interests. Those special interests include but are not limited to corporations.

The government is simply selling protection to corporations. If you (name of company) don't give use a little bit of money, then we will vote for law x that will cost you a big bit of money.

Both the Democrats and Republicans do this. Look at the tobacco businesses, they constantly pay off politicians for favored legislation.
