More, More, More Money
You can get a sense from this article on CNN what Homeland Security has come down to: shoveling hundreds of millions of dollars to state and local governments, based on the political influence of politicians that represent them and the effectiveness of their lobbyists. Millions and millions everywhere but still people complain that it's not enough. We are only one more disaster from the current levels of spending being increased 10 or 20 times, with no increase in effectiveness. A cynic would say that this is precisely what should have been expected--a cynic or a realist or anyone who knows anything about government.

Jeff,
But it's the *kind* of millions that are spent. Here, see Detroit's Homeland Security shop-o-rama:
an assault vehicle that can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Rumors are circulating that Governor Jennifer Granholm was seen hovering this thing over the top of the 80-story General Motors HQ....

Reactionary
Karen, I recall in the hoo-ha after 9/11, the AJC ran a photo of Georgia's newly minted state homeland security chief outside his HQ in rural Georgia. Swear to God, they had sandbagged machine gun nests around the building. When the al-Qaeda battalions come marching down I-75, Georgia will be ready.
