Mr. Rogers Goes to Washington
Ever wonder what Fred Rogers would sound like at a Congressional hearing? On May 1, 1969 he testified in front of the Senate Subcommittee on Communications. His Adlai Stevenson stick-to-it-ivness managed to convince the committee chair to approve an additional $11 million of taxpayers money to fund the show (on top of the $9 million already allocated annually).

I'll agree, it would be better to have a free country and no public television — even if that meant no Mister Roger's Neighborhood.
But, when I think of Sesame Street and its mind-numbing, ADHD producing camera cuts and nonsensical lights, actions, and sounds; when I think of Barney the purple dinosaur and the vapid, cloying nature of that show; when I think of Teletubbies (our tax dollars subsidizing Britain's public television) and its infantilism; when I think of all of that — and to top it off, that all of those shows are geared to sell merchandise, to further enrich those producing such "quality, non-profit television," funded at the public teet — I cannot think to waste my energies complaining about Fred Rogers.
That show was nothing if not genuine quality children's programming, and that man was nothing if not sincerely interested (and capable) of doing good for children.
If ever we do dismantle the welfare state, funding for that show should be the last thing to go.

I hear your well made point, loud & clear.
I suggest, though, Mr. Rogers should be de-funded 1st -primarily because the show Has merit.
His show would be most likely to garner the necessary private support to see to its continuation -proving it can be done.
The Absence of his show would leave the rest of the portfolio more readily seeable as the vacuous marketing-driven " " that it is.
P.S. I understand that Fred Rogers is no longer with us, tho, he show still seems to a major part of PBSKids, with its(the show's) own website.

On the one hand, Mr. Rogers looks sincere; on the other hand, one can't help but assume that the whole thing is staged, given that the supposedly so-intimidating Senator whose cold heart is ultimately warmed is a liberal Democrat.
I am sympathetic to the point about not complaining about Mr. Rogers given the rest of government's evil -- but since he specifically went to Congress to asked for money, and specifically refused to participate in the market (i.e., commercial television), he deserves it.

Your point is convincing. I'm reminded of Ayn Rand's notion of the Sanction of the Victim. What you point out is not the same thing; but, you point out the idea that a lot of bad is tolerated, or even promoted, because it enjoys a ride on the coat tails of the good that associates itself with it.
I find it hard to disagree with you. In theory the logic is unassailable; but as I understand it, the theory itself points out the problems of trying to put it into practice. As a matter of political strategy, complaining about Mister Rogers' Neighborhood will be more likely to alienate oneself from people who might otherwise be willing to listen to the argument. Better to stay quiet about Fred Rogers at the outset, until people have more time to come around to a philosophy of freedom.
To me, the risk is to be dimissed — however unjustly — as a crackpot. I've had people disagree with my take on this before, saying that the whole truth should be told from the outset. I respect that argument, but remain unconvinced.

I'm not suggesting that we "complain" about Mr. Rogers, but that it should pointed out how "good" the show is, and with that it doesn't "need" the "support" of PBS. Compare it to the "Corporate Welfare" that most of the PBS-supporters are aligned against.
