Beware the Alchemists

February 3, 2006 8:01 AM by Weekend Edition (Archive)

"Beware the Alchemists" by Ludwig von Mises is a book-length manuscript based on notes taken by Bettina B. Greaves during the Mises Seminar in New York in the 1960s. It appears on Mises.org for the first time. It is permanently archived here. A special thank you to Mrs. Greaves (mail) for making this wonderful essay available.

    Mrs. Greaves,

Thank you very much for this series of lectures, and for your efforts in transcribing and editing them. This is perhaps the most concise introduction to the great man's thoughts that I've read. A classic excerpt:

"When you destroy the monetary system, you are destroying in some regards the basis of all interhuman relations. If one talks of money, one talks about a field in which governments were doing the very worst thing which could be done, destroying the market, destroying human cooperation, destroying all peaceful relationships between men."
