Introducting the Mises Screensaver

September 5, 2005 4:55 AM by David Veksler (Archive)

A comment in response to my web services post challenged me to write a screen saver that featured Mises quotes. Of course, I could not let such a challenge go unanswered, and so, I present the Mises Screen Saver. It shows posts from the Mises Blog, random quotes by Mises, and background images featuring Mises, Rothbard, and the Mises Institute. Download it today!

Installation Notes:

  • The screensaver requires .Net 2.0, and will prompt you to download it from Microsoft if you do not have it.
  • Once the screensaver is installed, you must set it to be the default for it to show when your PC is idle. Right click on the desktop, and click “Properties.â€? Select “Screen Saver,â€? select the “Newsâ€? screen saver, and click OK.

Thanks, it's great but there seem to be just a couple of problems:

      1) The comment on the right side of the screen is showing with the HTML tags on it.

      2) It's difficult to read the quotes by Mises since they blend in with the pictures a lot (this is a problem with many screensavers unfortunately).

I think if the quotes were displayed in bright white rather than red they would be much easier to read.

      Nice one!

If I may have a special wish, could there be a bit _reduced_, off-line version of the saver, without Internet connectivity? I ask this in the name of unfortunate users that have a slower connection, or don't want to install .NET. So only the favourite quotes, maybe also with pictures.

The Mises quotes could be packaged as a "fortune" file for us *NIX (and maybe Mac) users for whome the Windows screen saver is inapplicable.

      Just a thought.

Yeah, I'd like to use this if it became available for my Ubuntu system (Debian/GNONE).

Thanks for the comments -- I will consider them while working on an improved version I will release in the next few days.

People on Unix using xscreensaver can use the "noseguy" screensaver with a program that gets quotes from mises.org. It'd be nice to replace the nose guy animation with pictures of von Mises.
