iTunes and the Mises.org Podcast

Isaac Bergman is a media enthusiast and a friend of the Mises Institute.

He writes:

I submitted and resubmitted the Mises podcast feed to the iTunes directory, but it doesn't look like the Apple moderators are going to add it to their directory any time soon.

Fret not, you can add it manually within iTunes, and enjoy the benefits the podcasting feature has to offer.

Open iTunes, then go to the menu --> "Advanced" --> "Subscribe to Podcast". It opens a dialog box which asks for the URL of the podcast, to which you paste: http://www.mises.org/mediaRSS.aspx . Click "OK" and go the sidebar and select "Podcasts". You will see your subscription to the Mises podcast, and you may click the arrow to see earlier feeds, which if you want them, you must click the "Get" button to download.

The advantage of using iTunes, instead of say iPodder or some other third-party software is two-fold. First, because it eliminates the need for two programs, now all you need is iTunes; and second, because podcasts are treated differently than regular audio files- they are accessed from without the typical iTunes library, and in the later generation iPods (4th generation and forward), you can bookmark in middle of a podcast, so that you can come back to it another time and continue from where you left off previously.

  • I was looking for an economic podcast for a while, I used Itunes for the search and nothing, I used google for the serach and I found http://feeds.feedburner.com/DrJamesReese, I thought that it was the only podcast about economics on the Internet, thanks to God I was wrong.

An idea, make an entry on your Blog with a list of the diferent podcast of the Internet (That you know), that are about economics.

  • If you don't see the "Subscribe to Podcast" menu item, then you don't have the latest iTunes. You need version 4.9, I had 4.8 and it did not have the option.

    Works great, thanks.

  • For Mises iPod Shuffle owners, I've found that iTunes 4.9 is not very iPod Shuffle friendly. You can't easily autofill with a shuffle with podcasts because the Podcasts library is not available as a source for autofill. Autofill is a feature that lets a Shuffle owner can hit a button and iTunes automatically fills the shuffle with content from a play list.

There's been quite a bit of discussion of this in the Apple Support Discussion Boards. You can work around this limitation by selecting all of the items in the Podcasts library (You don't need to hit the arrow to open the list of episodes) and dragging them into the main Library at the top of the list on the left hand column. You can set up a smart play list based on the Podcast genre and use that to autofill the Shuffle.

  • Isaac's submission (and mine and who knows who else) was finally accepted.

Now it is easier than ever to subscribe to the Mises podcast in iTunes. Just go to to the "Podcasts" section from the main page. Once at the main Podcasts page, type Mises in the search and the Mises podcast now shows up!

You might also try this link [iTunes must be installed!]: Search Results for Mises.

It is filed under "Politics" but when I go to the Politics Category I do not see it yet. Hopefully that will soon be resolved.

  • I guess I'm slow but it took me several days to figure out how to download more than just the latest lecture. And it turns out that clear instructions were in the original post: click the down arrow and "get" all the remaining podcasts.

  • I found the Mises Podcast in the Apple iTunes Podcast Directory. It is listed as "Latest Mises Media RSS 2.0 Podcast."

  • I wonder if or when there will be nonITunes/Ipod "podcasts"? I just bought a Dell DJ Ditty. I can manually download the files into my mp3 player, but I can't subscribe with my DJ and Musicmatch. Aside from this one drawback, I think the Dell DJ Ditty is far superior to its direct competitor Ipod Shuffle and $100 cheaper than the Nano.
