Mises Economics Blog

Books Over Baghdad?

According to Steven Taylor at Poliblogger.com (via Virginia Postrel and Jane Galt), a drive is underway to re-stock the library at Baghdad U. They say they need medical, math, and science books, preferably no more than 5 years old. The effort is apparently being headed up by Dr. Safaa al-Hamdani, professor of Biology at Jacksonville State.

While medicine, math, and science are all good and well, good economics books are more important because the functioning institutions of commercial society are necessary for medicine, math, and science to have any practical application. Anyone with a few dollars, a generous heart, and a desire to make lemonade with the lemons we've been handed in the Middle East might consider donating some selections from the Mises Institute's catalog.

  • It's time to start translating some of the Mises Institute's books into Arabic first, perhaps.

  • I have a similar situation. This July I will be traveling to the Russian city Tyumen in Siberia. I will be in close contact with the University of Tyumen and its staff. Some have requested I bring english language books for them to practice their language skills. Specifically, they have asked for books on economics, especially those regarding free markets.

What would be some good title suggestions for Russian university staff?

My first thought was Human Action by Mises. Any other titles come to mind?

Also, some of the staff speak German fluently, so I was imagining getting a copy of Nationaloconomie by Mises, but have been unable to find a copy.

Suggestions on titles and sources for german (even Russian) language books on Austrian Economics would be appreciated.
