So Bow Ties are Cool

April 9, 2009 by

Not that it matters to me one way or another, but the Wall Street Journal says that bow ties are hip, cool, trend setting, edgy, and all the rest.

This matters because of this.

You can riff on such themes for a thousand articles in light of the rise of Great Depression fashion.

As far as I’m concerned, bowties, hats, and even “tuxedos” never went out of fashion:

The article mentions bow ties made in non-silk (non-traditional?) materials like wool and “Madras, seersucker, twill, matte and jacquard”.

What do you think of the non-silk bow tie, Jeffrey?

They can be fine but sometimes tricky to tie.

I want a T-shirt with Roger Garrison’s picture of Friedrich Hayek in sunglasses on it.

Get on that, please. ;-)

Nooooo! Sorry – I can’t believe it. Next you will be telling me bolo ties are fashionable. Granted – some people can get away with it – others can’t (myself included). But to be fashionable wouldn’t it need to make most people look good (like we all thought we were so cool in those ‘new-wave’ thin knit neckties in the 80s)? Hmmm…. I’ll bet I still have that tie…

If we want to do this right though, we really need to bring back the Ascot, I saw Kanye wear it once and I think it needs to be adopted more broadly. And if we wear the ascot, then to go all the way we will also bring back the high buttoned vest and the priest collar dress shirt. That’s the way to go.

The only thing good about bowties is that they are good for getting you out of jury duty, or so I’ve heard. Apparently, people who wear them are too difficult to predict, and so the lawyers don’t like them in juries.

And if the bowtie doesn’t seem to be working, you could always mention the two magic words “jury nullification”! *grin*

This is just silly. What next? Claiming that the 17th Century powdered wig is coming back in? Only bow ties that spin round, making a whistling noise whilst spraying water should ever be permitted in civilised company.

I doubt the bow tie fits well with the Bob cut.

Next up: Hats.
(fingers crossed)

Where can I find this picture of Hayek in sunglasses? The only Hayek I can find in sunglasses is Salma.

I have been wearing bow ties since my youth, long before I knew it was a “secret handshake” amongst the Austrian crowd.

A solid conversation starter at parties and social events, makes you memorable. If foolish people find it goofy just think about all the other things these people believe.

I want a cravat! :)

From the article:

“Younger fashion icons like the Jonas Brothers pop trio are adopting the look.”

Yeah, the Jonas Brothers are “fashion icons” and abstinence is hip.

Does anybody seriously believe this?

bow-ties are great for lanky bodies. reducing the vertical lines is the key to doing some optical bulking-up. avoid pin-stripe and go for window-pane, or plain.

for the portly, i’d go for the traditional neck-tie. verticals are your friend.

Is it too much to try to do the ascot with a seersucker suit??

The Doctor June 9, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I wear a bow tie now. Bow ties are cool.
