The works of Leonard E. Read, who founded the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) in 1946, are now online at the Mises Institute. It is probably not the complete collected works, but it is all that he collected in book form. These are books that shaped several generations of activists, donors, writers, and intellectuals. They are the books that kick-started the libertarian movement after World War II. FULL ARTICLE

Yes indeed, Leonard Read was truly a giant in the cause of human freedom, and through FEE’s marvelous publication, THE FREEMAN, he provided a platform for other giants in the cause, including Ludwig von Mises. Read was certainly responsible for me falling in love with of the principles of liberty. To this day I can remember the anticipation and excitement I felt with the arrival in the mail of each month’s edition of his magazine, which never disappointed. Most of all, I remember his profound advice: (and I paraphrase) Don’t seek to improve the world, work instead to improve yourself, for the former is an impossible task whereas the latter can accomplish the impossible. Thanks for reminding me of this truly gentle man.
I am happy to see this sharing or collaboration between the two great institutions: FEE and the Mises Institute.
I’ve long been a member of both FEE and LvMI. FEE may or may not recognize this publication of Read’s work online by its “competitor” as helpful to it, but: (a) it IS helpful to FEE; and (b) MUCH more important (including to FEE), it is helpful to freedom.
I’m sure they join me in gratefully congratulating LvMI on this great beneficent act.
Larry Reed is thrilled and so is Sheldon Richman. Of course we have given all files to FEE to host on their own site.
