Beth Hoffman (1950-2008)

December 2, 2008 by

From Mary Sennholz and Robert G. Anderson comes the very sad news of the death of Beth Hoffman, a brilliant libertarian. I got to know Beth’s competence and dedication when we worked together at Hillsdale College. So I was not surprised that when she joined the staff at FEE, she became – for more than 30 years – the heart and soul of the place, and of their monthly Freeman magazine. Beth was found dead at FEE. She is survived by her husband, Peter, and their son, Teddy. God rest her soul.

How sad. I saw Beth often, back when I taught at Ramapo College and could get to FEE regularly. She will be missed.

I wrote an article for the Freeman more than ten years ago, and still remember Beth’s kindness and generous personality during the publication process. Years later, I called her out of the blue with random question about ancient FEE articles and, although she barely knew me, she was more than happy to oblige. I never knew her well, but I knew her well enough to think highly of her and to recognize her high value to FEE. She was clearly a special person. My sympathies to her family.

I have known Beth for over 20 years. She has been one of the stalwart pillars at FEE. I last saw her the the Evening at FEE on November 22. Who would have guessed that would be the last time I’d see her? I spent five minutes speaking with her right in front of the fireplace that evening. She is a wonderful person and ever since I first published an article in the Freeman in 1989 I have had the opportunity to cross paths with her on my many visits to FEE. She has always been kind and thoughtful and she will be sorely missed as the Managing Editor of the Freeman. On behalf of my wife and myself, I would like to extend our condolences to her husband, son, other family members, and all of her friends at FEE.

Beth was a most helpful editor and from what I knew of her a generous and conscientious person. Over the several decades we had been in contact, I found her wonderful to work with.
