Marshall Fritz, RIP

November 12, 2008 by

Marshall Fritz, founder of the Alliance for the Separation of School and State, was a good friend of the Mises Institute, and we are sadden to hear of his passing. He struggled his entire life, out of serious dedication to the cause of liberty, to find ways to crystalize and market the message of freedom. It troubled him that something so true, so sensible, so beneficial for all the world, was not widely embraced by the majority, and sought to find ways to change this. Here was his passion and he never tired in his struggle to find innovative ways of educating people. In the end, he was convinced that the key was to get the kids out of the public school system and into a private system. With this focus, he was thinking about the future, beyond his own times to a world of liberty he always believed was achievable.

As an agitator for getting out of government schools, I signed Fritz’s pledge years ago without ever knowing who he was.

It’s only been through the stories of his death that I have learned of his life. Ah, the irony of it all!

Before the Alliance for the Separation of School and State, Marshall was heavily involved in Advocates for Self-Government, and had a lot to do with developing the World’s Smallest Quiz. Marshall was an activist in a very real sense.

I am really enjoying reading every page of this man’s website. He made spectacular lists of things to do during his last months, and he looked forward to spending the last three months or so in hospice care with his daughter while seeing his homeschooled grandkids around him.
