The Money Factory

March 14, 2008 by

So I’m sitting here in the Massey Library at the Mises Institute watching on the closed circuit TV the lectures by Joe Salerno and others in the Schlarbaum Seminar Room. Salerno mentioned that a $100 bill cost about 2 cents to print. Gil Guillory and I got curious about this and so I googled it. It seems Joe was in the ballpark, but during the search I ended up stumbling upon the site for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Its website is, I kid you not, www.MoneyFactory.gov. I suspect they did this with a complete lack of irony.

Yes, great lecture. I made time to watch in my office on livefeed in between, yes, conference calls involving an intellectual property dispute. You made me smile.

I think the money factory is going to be very busy, perhaps we should do a bake sale to help them out.

I can see them doing this without irony as well. And it really sickens me.

In 2006 I took a photo of the US Mint in DC because it had a banner up saying something similarly ironic. I will look for the picture so I can get the slogan correct…

After poking around the site a bit, I found this gem:

“You won’t have to exchange your old $5 bills for the new ones. Your old money will always be good. In fact, every U.S. banknote issued since 1861 is still redeemable today at full face value and will continue to be legal currency. In addition, there will be no recall or devaluation of any U.S. bills as the United States has never devalued its currency and will not do so now. “

Another irony that you will find embedded in the “money factory!” website is the proudly featured ‘Year of the Rat!!!!!!!’

I wonder which rat they are referring to. Is it the GWB rat or the BB rat or the HRC rat or the BO rat or the JMcC rat or maybe the head honcho CFR rat!
