Mencken’s Notes on Democracy

February 13, 2008 by

If you have read this book or heard of it or have thoughts on this book, can you post a note or drop me a line at tucker@mises.org? Thanks.

Here is Rothbard’s article “Mencken: The Joyous Libertarian.” It’s a super piece! I don’t believe that Murray had this book by Mencken in his personal library, and he doesn’t cite it here. But overall it seems like his most systematic work on politics.

I’ve read it. (Within the last 4-5 months actually.) It’s a small book, around 200 pages. It’s a pretty easy read as well. The book’s broken into a few sections: democracy in relationship to liberty, nature of democratic governments, nature of man, etc. You can probably guess as to what Mencken thought about all of these issues. I don’t own the book however. I borrowed it from my college’s library.
