Rothbard Instituut

December 18, 2007 by

Congratulations to Michael Bauwens and all the organizers and faculty of the new Murray Rothbard Institute in Antwerp, Flanders. Murray would be thrilled.

Thanks!

Thank you!

There is definately something brewing over here. One blog was speaking about ‘the wild-growth’ of freemarket think tanks, and it seems the Flemish newspapers are also picking up on the rise of free-market oriented thought in our region. Let’s hope that the Rothbard Instituut can help provide the economic rigour to back the message. Exciting times!

The VB seemed positively enthused with Hoppe.

Inquisitor, I wouldn’t count too much on the VB for spreading the message of liberty.

They’re at heart a nationalist, solidarist party and very populist. In fact, they don’t really have a programme that’s worth the name. If you read their publications, it becomes obvious that they just want everyone to vote for them – the unemployed, the elderly, the unskilled labourers, the entrepreneurs, etc.

Letting Hoppe speak at a meeting with their ‘capitalist’ fans does not prevent them from blaming globalisation, multinationals and migration for unemployment in Flanders.

I’d personally rather not be associated with them.

And Belgium already had a Ludwig von Mises institute as well. Who’s next?

Koen Deconinck December 19, 2007 at 11:47 am

The Belgian LVMI that you refer to, is actually the (admittedly, Brussels-based) Ludwig von Mises Institute Europe.

However, they don’t seem to be very active.

Hmm, after all maybe it would be a good thing the country doesn’t split… and the French community politicians would have a new opportunity to make some profit out of such knowledge… to find back to Mr. de Molinari and co.

Where…?
All I see is ‘globlisation isn’t that good’ and ‘buying-power is in danger’, etc.

P.s. Hoe vertaal je in hemelsnama koopkracht?

Anyway. The Vlaams Belang (VB) is sure as hell ain’t going to spread the word for liberty. Nor will the 2 more ‘liberal’ partys. (Who are, indeed, liberal in the American meaning of the word.)

Well, there’s “globalization” and then there’s “free trade.”

What the Thomas Friedmans and George Bushes et al. mean when they speak of “globalism” is not free trade so much as it is social democracy with a global tax base. It also means privatizing the profits of global trade and socializing the costs. This is why I regard resurgent European nationalism as a welcome relief to the relentless cultural Marxism forced down everybody’s throats by the ruling elite.
