Speaking at Wheeling Jesuit University

October 19, 2007 by

Next Tuesday, October 23, at 7:00 pm, I’ll be speaking at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, on the subject “Globalization and the Churches: Are We Ready to Learn from Failure?” This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the papal encyclical Populorum Progressio, for which the late Peter Bauer had choice words decades ago. I’ll be looking at economic development in the less-developed world — what works and what doesn’t — and speaking frankly about what the social-justice crowd has wrought. Details here.

Tom, will your talk be recorded?

I’m curious about the encyclopedia you’re co-editing, any details?

BK, I don’t know if they intend to record it, though they very well might. Regarding the encyclopedia, it’s slated for release sometime next year — I don’t have a more precise date than that. It’s aimed at early high school students but the entries are written at a level that would make them useful to anyone, in my opinion.

I co-edited it with a non-libertarian (but academically serious) professor from the University of Southern Mississippi. We split the entries between us. Some of the people I chose will be familiar to readers of this site — Bruce Benson, for example, did the entry on crime and punishment, Jeff Hummel did the one on tariffs, etc.
