If you subscribe to wsj.com, they are starting a new forum today, kicked off by Brad DeLong and Arnold Kling (of the Cato Institute). After a tit-for-tat in which these big boys seem mostly to agree, participation is invited from readers as to what they think of the New Deal.
The participation seems remarkably well informed on the superficial details of the Depression (as well as Timberlake’s Great Contraction of 1929-33), but as to conclusions, the participation seems amazingly left. Either the Wall Street Journal’s readership just isn’t as “conservative” (anti-government) as I thought, or my long affiliation with the Mises Institute has drawn me far to the right of the rightists.
Not only is all this interesting, but it affords us (here) the opportunity to talk to an influential and informed portion of what I’ll call the “Great Unwashed.”
I’ve already done so once, and will do so some more, but I haven’t spotted any overtly Austrian input to this forum, so naturally I’d welcome some company from anyone here so inclined.

Rest assured, it is the latter. Until finding this site, I thought the WSJ was a far to the right as you could get.
Tom, judging by your post here and in another thread, you should probably do some reading before making further ignorant comments. You’ve made it perfectly clear that you know nothing about this website or the ideas it represents. You’re just making childish assumptions and running with them.
Agreed, I am not a member of the club. And agreed, that my comments are “ignorant” at this point, in the sense that I’ve not read any Rombard, or von Mises, though I have read some Hayek, and I’m fully versed in the Chicago school. But I will say I am intrigued enough to do some of the reading available here. That being said, I don’t think there is anything childish about making the observation that your opinions are to the right of the right. Objectively, I think that is true. Why are you not comfortable with that categorization? I would think you would regard it as a compliment.

There is nothing “conservative” or “right-wing” about being anti-government. In fact, it is a (true) liberal point of view.
After much study and reflection, I have come to view libertarianism from a postmodern, Hegelian perspective which understands that the labels “liberal” and “conservative” have no real meaning anymore, as both are forms of statism that cannot be resolved on the statist continuum. Rather, because each is the “antithesis” of the other’s “thesis,” libertarianism resolves them in a “synthesis” that purges them of their inherent statism and leaves liberty unto itself, looking down from above, as it were, and able to see the futility of each accordingly.
And the beauty of everything else.
I would also say that insofar as the US has come to epitomize liberalism-conservatism in the welfare-warfare state, it has achieved that which would be the antithesis of the libertarian synthesis.

Or, they mean all kinds of different things and almost always are used in some pop-politic perspective that bears little resemblence to the roots of the words. For that reason, I reject most the usage I hear as pop-poli-babble.
I’m not sure that would justify throwing the words away. There is nothing wrong with the root meanings. Root conservative behavior simply means to adhere to tradition. As government has become a highly institutionalized tradition (institution and tradition are even redundent), it is “conservative” to sustain it. That is why I could not agree with NJP.
There are, I think, two ways or tacts to break the tradition of government as an institution: (1) by act power, (2) by exercise of freedom. To be free is to have liberty — to be liberal in exercising the freedom to move away from statism. All non-imposing breaks with any tradition are in essence “liberal.” The environment sorts out the successful breaks. The only reason “libertarianism,” as a political philosophy term, needed to come into existence at all was because “liberalism” got co-opted by socialists. They both start with “liber” and so techically have the same root: Latin liberalis, from liber, free. Yes, “liberalism” as it is commonly used is indeed a corrupted word.
As an added note, I think most people’s everyday behavior is heavily drenched in conservativism, when the root of the word is applied. People who completely shun all traditions are most likely to end up in jails, mental institutions, or homeless soup kitchens.
