Economic Doctrine and Method: A Historical Sketch (154, 1912), full text in PDF.
In the centre of the discussion there stands the great methodological achievement of C. Menger: Untersuchungen über die Methode der Sozialwissenschaften und der politischen Oekonomie insbesondere. It led people out of the stage of observation and individual arguments and attempted to clarify the struggle about methods by a thorough discussion of principles. In doing so it defended the theoretical position against the misunderstandings to which it had been exposed. In this respect there was indeed a great deal to be done.
