Socializing With Movementarians

October 5, 2006 by

For those readers unfamiliar with sites like MySpace and Facebook, they are social networking services, somewhat similar to The Austrian Network (albeit with more functionality).

What this has come to mean is that users are given the ability to create a permanent detailed profile that includes activities, jobs, interests and a slew of other interactive minutiae. You can then search for and talk to friends, classmates, colleagues, roommates, family members, and millions of other people. See the Wikipedia entry on SNS and Web 2.0.

Recently Facebook opened its doors to the public-at-large (it had been exclusive to college students only) and as a result, you too can keep track of your friends and families.

In addition, users can start interest groups whose members can then discuss various issues. Some of these include:

- Everything I Need to Know About Life I Learned from Jeff Tucker
- The Rothbardians (musical group)
- Walter Block=Genius
- Ludwig von Mises is cooler than Mick Jagger

And apropos Lew Rockwell’s article on drunk driving, is the germane: Keg Stands for Liberty.

High School students were able to get onto Facebook as well before the general opening. But Facebook still sucks, at least in comparison to Myspace. Sad but true. Facebook’s codebase is so much cleaner than Myspace’s, but it just can’t (won’t?) do what Myspace does.

Wasn’t there a The Simpson’s episode in which Homer joined a cult called the “Movementarians”?

There is also a group entitled “Abolish the Federal Reserve”, and there are quite a few for the decriminalization of drugs. I don’t know how effective these groups will be in spreading ideas of liberty around, but at a minimum it is nice to know that one is not alone in thinking certain ways.

I started the “Life, Liberty, Property” group with the hopes of attracting constitutional-minded conservatives and maybe exposing them to some Austrian thought (which they may not be likely to get at university).
