The Hayek Shirt is actually cool

July 21, 2006 by

Some people said that our original Hayek shirt graphic makes the shirt look not quite right. So we shot this photo today to prove otherwise:

Yes, the Hayek shirt is cool. I especially like the “collectivism is slavery” tag. My only problem is the color. It just seems like too generic a shade of blue. I would suggest cerulean on the lighter side or midnight blue on the darker. Nevertheless, I do own one anyway.

Brett Celinski July 22, 2006 at 2:37 pm

The Rothbard shirt is pure hardcore. I love beefy t’s.

If Mises.org is looking for an artist to make new designs, however… *whistles and points to self*

The shirts are a great idea, though, I still don’t understand why there aren’t choices of colors offered for each imprint…

Greg July 22, 2006 at 4:12 pm

I would much rather buy a gold bar with hayek’s face engraved on it.

M E Hoffer July 22, 2006 at 4:42 pm

Yet another call for vMI branded “financial services”.

See: “I would much rather buy a gold bar with hayek’s face engraved on it.”

If vMI is interested, they could run a contest to solicit designs for, the Troy Oz. Bar/Round.

I think they might be surprised at how quickly such an idea would be dug, even @ digg.

vMI could sell the resulting ingots as a “fund-raiser” and/or use them as prizes for works deemed beneficial to furthering the cause of vMI’s fine work. Dare I say(?)they could be used as the physical exchange backer for an e-gold affiliation.

Also, 10 Troy Oz. ingots of Ag would give a larger available “frame” and some additional “fluidity”.

see : http://www.nwtmint.com/MakeMedallion/MakeMedallion.htm

on an example of the process involved.

Would the institute ever make Wieser, Kirzner or Lachmann tees, or are they personae non grata around here?

Schumpeter may have deserted the Austrian school, but at least he has a wicked catch-phrase: “Creative Destruction”.

A few comments on the shirt question (which fascinates me). The idea that we should offer a full range of all colors in all styles set me back a bit. Really, even offering these is a huge undertaking in inventory. Huge! It would be irresponsible, to say that least, for us to attempt to increase it by 100 times or whatever taking the above suggestion would involve. I mean, it’s a nice idea but would surely bankrupt the tiny Mises Institute.

On a Wieser and Lachmann shirt (Kirzner is still living), the marketability of either seems rather remote. I mean, it’s remarkable enough that the Boehm-Bawerk shirt sells as well as it does.

I might as well use this space to provides a heads up on a wonderful expansion of this line that is coming up in perhaps a coule of weeks: wonderful shirts of Bastiat, Nock, Turgot, Aristotle, and Say. They are just dazzling! So stay tuned!

Jim Fedako July 22, 2006 at 8:43 pm

Actually, the Boehm-Bawerk is the best. It seems every time I wear it someone asks if it’s Che – probably the olive green throws them for a loop. What a wonderful way to strike up a conversation.

Anthony July 22, 2006 at 8:58 pm

I was wondering about the status of the Bastiat t-shirt and if a tagline had been agreed upon. The news of even more shirts on the way is great news.

The idea of the same shirt in different colors does not seem a good one as I like the idea of being able to recognize the shirt by the color. It keeps them distinct and original.

I would suggest Molinari, de la Boetie, Cantillon, and de Mariana for the third installment.

Or, Laozi who stated “”[T]he more official taboos and restrictions there are in the world, the more the people are impoverished… The more that laws and regulations are given prominence, the more thieves and robbers there will be.””

Or, Chuang Tzu who stated ““[G]ood order results spontaneously when thing are let alone.”” And, ““a petty thief is put in jail. A great brigand becomes a ruler of State.””

It might even be time for the living legend Rockwell shirt?

jeffrey July 22, 2006 at 9:02 pm

It was actually a tough call on which 5 people to pick for this second set. We had thought about a unifying theme (pre-Austrians? Philosophers? American libertarians?) and then decided on just going with the 5 that seemed most necessary.

I can’t wait to release them and hear all your comments! So far, the Turgot shirt is the surprise hit. But many people like the Say shirt: one person said, “wow you wouldn’t want to wear that into a rough Keynesian bar!”

David J. Heinrich July 22, 2006 at 9:39 pm

I know the LvMI isn’t into financial stuff, but a Murray Rothbard or Ludwig von Mises gold coin would rock! I would definately buy it!

TGGP July 23, 2006 at 7:51 am

The mention of Aristotle took me by surprise. I never knew he was considered a libertarian/economist.

jeffrey July 23, 2006 at 11:18 am

Aristotle is there because of his logical system of thought, his advocacy of reason, his brilliance as a scientific thinker, but mostly because of his defense of private property. In fact, the shirt itself has two words under the picture: Private Property.

Neat!

TGGP July 24, 2006 at 4:27 am

I’ll have to check out Aristotle’s defense of private property.

I know you probably won’t do it, but if you made an Adam Smith shirt, I swear I would buy that one and the Rothbard one. The latter just plain looks good and will invite questions as to who that Rothbard character is. The former is, for better or worse, synonymous with capitalism for many people. Even before I heard of the institutes shirts, I wanted one as sort of a joke at the expense of the Che shirts worn by people who don’t know jack about Che. I was beaten to the punch by those “Viva la Reagan Revolution” shirts, but I think Smith would be better. Some others who influenced Rothbard that might be good choices are Locke and Spooner, although Kevin Carson might object that we would be horning in on his rightful territory with the latter (if you’re reading this Kevin, that was intended for humorous effect).

Brett Celinski July 24, 2006 at 7:54 pm

Make an HL Mencken shirt, with him smoking his cigar. It would be totally sweet.

Harvey July 24, 2006 at 8:40 pm

You are right, Bastiat deserves a shirt before Molinari, but he should be next on the list. Albert Jay Nock deserves a shirt before Mencken, but then he should be next. The next shirts are up for grabs with ancient Greeks, Chinese, other Physiocrats, and Scholastics, all equally deserving.

Aakash July 24, 2006 at 9:42 pm

There’s a Rothbard shirt? (I guess I had forgotten about that one.)

Note: It hasn’t even been a month since I turned 25… ;-)

Response: why carry any inventory? Have a supplier or three of generic Tees on call, and have them print the images after customer order and before shipping.

jeffrey July 25, 2006 at 5:44 am

David, the sacrifice of quality would be too great under those conditions.

M E Hoffer July 25, 2006 at 7:04 am

Why not set up an online poll to help determine which luminary(-ies) should peer from the next crop of official vMI T’s ?

jeffrey July 25, 2006 at 7:35 am

Excellent idea! thanks

David August 8, 2006 at 2:08 am

I just saw the movie ‘Enemy of the State’ on DVD.

I was struck by the resemblance of the Gene Hackman character to the profile on the Rothbard T-shirt, right down to the heavy-rimmed glasses.

tell me that wasn’t a coincidence: which came first, the shirt or the movie?

Barry August 21, 2006 at 6:11 pm

To Greg, and others who would like to see a Hayek engraved in gold: I have a perfect proof 1979 1/2 ounce Hayek gold coin, which I am willing to sell, if anyone is interested. It features the face of Friedrich A. Hayek. I bought it new in 1979. It has not been handled outside of it’s clear case.

Serious interest only: namuhapah@yahoo.com

Thanks

Someone asked me what strategy hedge funds use? A Hedge fund buddy told me they use the “MMindicator”.. pretty much standard in the industry.
