When Demand Outstrips Supply

May 10, 2006 by

A British high school student seems to be writing other “Harry Potter” books, including one with 90 chapters (“Meetings in the Tower”) that has become an underground classic. It seems to be formatted as a “quiz,” possibly to avoid copyright trouble (but others have put it into .doc and sent it around). HP-starved teens just can’t wait for the real author to finish the next one; they want HP and want it now!

I’m sure that one won’t last long before being pulled; still, it’s rather clever (if you ask me).

Seems there exists an opportunity for mutual benefit here. If Rowling finds the “unauthorized” book to be of merit, she can “endorse” the book in exchange for royalties. Rowlings gets money and further builds the Potter empire, the student gets to sell his book legally, and will sell many more with her endorsement than without.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see such an agreement, rather than following the usual copyright/lawsuit path?
