Don’t Do It, Google

May 4, 2006 by

MS seems to be planning further to leverage its control of the desktop to make further inroads into the search market, in which it is currently not doing very well. This is the source of Google’s complaint, and vague insinuations are in the air to the effect that Google might, just might, ask the Justice Department (and the European Commission) to intervene. Considering their eagerness to deal with communist China, I’m not sure they have much if any qualms about using government force for their benefit.

While I wish it were possible to play the underdog to all national governments in the name of Liberty, the fact is that in order to do business in the United States, Google abides the laws of the United States.

Is that what you meant, Frank?

Frank N Stein May 4, 2006 at 3:58 pm

I’m not sure how abiding by the laws of the United States, and possibly pursuing a bogus charge against Microsoft, are equivalent. So what exactly do you mean, Curt?

Michael May 4, 2006 at 4:41 pm

Google’s founders are avowed leftists. Just ask them.

Curt Howland May 4, 2006 at 6:19 pm

Frank, by “dealing” with communist China, which BTW is far less confiscatory than the American IRS, Google was in fact simply following their laws.

If you object to Google obeying Chinese law, do you also object to Google obeying American law?

Google is old news. Thus they’re going down the path of so many loser companies before them, whining to DC for handouts. Look at Google Talk: crap compared to a proper IM program. Google Finance: a joke. Orkut: slow and spammy when it’s manages to stay up. They hired a few too many beard-stroking PhDs. The only thing Google does that manages to make any money is text ads. Big deal. A high schooler with a book on PHP can do text ads.

David Heinrich May 4, 2006 at 7:04 pm

Wesley,

Actually, I think Google’s IM is great compared to other IM’s. Not as many functions, but its very quick, and simple, and is integrated with their e-mail service.

Curt Howland May 4, 2006 at 9:17 pm

Wesley, the fact is that no highschooler with a book on PHP did it.

It’s easy to point at entrepreneurial success after the fact and say, “That’s obvious!” Just don’t fall into the trap of violating the 10th Commandment.

What Google is doing reminds me of what Netscape tried to be: a jack of all trades; master of none. It turns out most of the software they authored was crap except for the new html rendering core which took YEARS of (eventually open source) development to become available as an actual product.

Netscape also blamed their woes on Microsoft and dragged them into the courts.

Is that enough foresight for you Curt? We’ve been here before, and we can see where this is going. The only difference is that Lew didn’t write an article saying “Don’t do it, Netscape” in the mid-90s.

“MS does own Windows and it will own its successor too. It also owns Internet Explorer.”

I have to sharply disagree here. To say that Microsoft owns Windows is to say that it has property rights to the specific arrangement of information on my physical media( CDs, hard drives etc.). Such a claim is quite absurd.

Microsoft is the product of unjust enforcement of absurd intellectual property laws.

“MS does own Windows and it will own its successor too.”

I have to disagree there. That would mean that Microsoft has a right to control the manner in which I choose to organize and process information on my computer.

The idea that companies can ‘own’ software or any other kind of ‘intellectual property’ is absurd.

Microsoft is the product of such absurdities which are unjustly enforced by the government.
