Fast Times At Yiwu High

May 2, 2006 by

Ever wonder how the local dollar store is able to sell a wide variety of products at relatively low prices and still stay profitable? As the Asia Times notes, directly or indirectly, the Chinese city of Yiwu probably had some hand in the exchange process. With annual sales exceeding $3 billion, the World Bank recently acknowledged it as the biggest “small commodities” market on the planet. See also this report from The Standard.

A 9-year old kid came back from a birthday party the other day, holding a cheapo little plastic toy. He said to me: “Look, it says ‘Made in China’ but there’s no way that this cheapo little thing was made in China.”

It took me a moment to realize what he was saying. His age group is convinced that only great, fabulous, high-quality things come from China, the same as we think good stuff comes from Japan, whereas our grandparents thought Japan only produces cheapo nothings.

Yiwu City was founded in the Qin dynasty, at or about 222 BC. Yiwu’s long history flourished as early as the Neolithic Age. Yiwu first became a county in 222BC and was renamed Yiwu County in the year 624 AD. In May 1988, the former Yiwu County was upgraded to a county-level city. In 1995, Yiwu ranked the 47th among China’s 100 most powerful counties/cities regarding comprehensive economic strength and in the same year listed as Zhejiang’s sole city among the nation’s experimental counties/cities of comprehensive reform. In 2001, the Yiwu overall economy ranked 19th of all counties (cities) of China.
