Right Nav Question

April 15, 2006 by

We were looking at the right nav on this blog and wondering whether there should be more or fewer “recent comments” listed there. Do you use them? Does it have the right amount now? Should they be higher on the page or lower? Your thoughts on this or other issues very much welcome. You can post or email.

{ 16 comments }

I do not use them at all since I just use a blog aggregator to read both entries and comments. It would be interesting to see what percentage of folks do that vs how many browse from the page itself.

Right amount.

Regards, Don

I use them and they seem about right to me.

The recent comments are very helpful but too few. About 50% more would work best, I’d think.

The “MISES CHAT”, “NEW IN THE STORE”, and “SEARCH” should be shifted over to the blank (and wasted) left margin of the page, allowing the remaining items on the right to rise higher (and thereby be more conveniently seen and accessed when first arriving on the page).

Thanks for asking.

At first, I was going to respond that I do not use them. But I guess the more I think about it, I do use them on occassion. Amount seems right to me; maybe a bit on the heavy side.

I use them, and sometimes wish there were more (keeping. say. 10 or 12 hours worth would be better than a particular number).

I used to use Mozilla Thunderbird to read the comments, but as of the comment posted at 2005-10-24 19:20 all comments only show “A Comment” instead of the text of the comment, so I can’t use that any more.

Never use them.

I seldom look at the comments in the right column. The postings drive my use of the blog, and if the comment is interesting, then I’ll look at the comments by way of the postings.

With Steven on this. Blog use driven by Posts.
The RE taken by the “comments” may be better used by an RSS “news” feed or a Kitco chart feed to give a blow by blow of the further devaluation of our fantastic fiat. )

Right nav? Once again, I wish I knew what you were talking about. But the blog is fine with me as it is.

Francisco Torres April 16, 2006 at 11:59 am

I have used them. I do not think it it hinders the experience of reading the blog, so I do not think you need to take it away.

I think you should have as many as space allows. Since it will keep more threads in the air. If a debate is going on a thread from months back then you might be easily able to keep track of it without checking all that often.

One doesn’t want to lose the debate on an important subject simply because its from a couple of months back. And so I think as many ‘recent comments’ as can be fitted in may keep some discussions alive longer or make it easier to resurrect old ones.

I’m with Graeme and RP on this; showing recent comments makes it easier to see what discussions are ongoing and thus facilitate interaction.

I use a RSS aggregator, don’t use them.

Steven Ng April 25, 2006 at 9:51 pm

I have changed my mind. After scanning the comments, I find the right nav comment postings rather useful.

M E Hoffer April 25, 2006 at 9:55 pm

I’ll second that….
