Will Smith vs. Fiat Money

April 12, 2006 by

According to this UPI article, Will Smith is gearing up to make Greenbacks, a movie about “a plot to destabilize the world economy though a sophisticated money counterfeiting plot.” Should be amusing to see the movie’s treatment of the economics involved, whether it gets them right or wrong. Given that it’s from the people who brought us Double Jeopardy, I’m not expecting much sophistication. But given that these people also brought us The Rock, I am expecting our hero to be seen running away from many huge explosions.

Incidentally, I offer my congratulations to UPI’s proofreaders on the word “ex-patriot.”

So… it’s about the Fed?

Sorry. I couldn’t resist.

Hopefully it’s Hollywood and D.C. that are involved. But more realistically, it’s probably about the world running out of green ink, alas.

This sounds exactly like my idea for Spider-Man 3. In my movie Spider-man takes on a crazed economist who attempts to destablize the world economy by printing massive amounts of US dollars. Unfortunately, my movie idea has been stolen now and I was too late to “patent” the idea, but more depressing is that Thomas is right, my movie has become reality.

Of course, if you want some fiat-money related entertainment, admittedly of the comedic variety, check out this article on the price of gold from Slate. That’s entertainment!

It is amazing how much the government hates competition. This is especially true for the currency. The government normally uses extreme coercion, confiscation of property and/or imprisonment, to maintain its monopolies but in the case of counterfeiting, it will KILL to maintain that monopoly.

Inflation is under control, but gold is rising because it’s caught up in a “global commodity boom” … …

Yes, comedy lives on.
