On Ed Opitz

February 22, 2006 by

Gary North has a very nice piece today on LRC on Ed Opitz. I read his book in college, and it had an impact. The one time I met him was about 15 years ago on a weekend when I was doing some research at FEE. He practiced his French horn for several hours in the office, which is enormously charming because most brass players never pick up their horns again after losing their chops at a young age. He was determined to keep playing, and he was pretty darn good, especially considering that this is the hardest of all brass instruments. He struck me as a man of principle and high culture. He leaves a wonderful intellectual and personal legacy.

Yes,
I thought Gary did a “bang-up” job on Opitz. Beth Hoffman (I think it’s hers, anyway) has one on the FEE.org website: http://fee.org/in_brief/default.asp?id=277

Here are my two posts on the two recent deaths at FEE:

Just a thought.

GN is probably a first class human being who would make a great next door neighbor.

On the other hand, he is a Reconstructionist which is hardly libertarian.

See http://www.freebooks.com

The goal of Reconstructionists is to set up an Old Testament world wide government on this earth. Only “real” Christians would be franchised. “Real Christianity” is defined by VanTil and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

I met Mr. Opitz in 1981 at FEE and he struck me as a very nice and very well educated man.

Re: billwald’s comment: I also enjoy much of Gary North’s writing, but I don’t believe he is a libertarian and I was greatly disappointed with the Mises Institute when he was given the Murray Rothbard medal a few years ago. See:

billwald, how did the Orthdox Presbyterian Church make it into your critique? Not the truth.
