Adele von Mises (1858-1937) was Ludwig’s beloved mother, and thanks to the hard work of a relative, we now have here first-hand account of what life was like in Galicia the year that Mises was born. It was from her that Ludwig developed his passionate devotion to the welfare of his fellow men and women, including the poorest members of society. This devotion was the legacy of a long-standing tradition of charity and civic leadership on both sides of his family. This poignant and touching memoire provides extraordinary insight into Ludwig’s early years. This heartwarming story should be an eye-opener for most modern people, who assume that nothing in the way of health care or relief of the poor could possibly take place without the intervention of government. And you don’t even have to read between the lines to see that the poverty didn’t just “happen” but was caused by government:
This is also something to chew on for those Jew-haters who insist that it is always Jews who get rich while everyone else gets poor.
