The government has graciously decided to allow people to carry nail clippers and thread scissors on airplanes. Whoo hoo!

Heh. One time I forgot that I had a small pair of scissors in a first aid kit I brought along on a hiking trip. Bad move. The guy searching made a show of it, took his time, and looked back and forth between me, the crowd and my carry-on bag. He then found the “item” and held it up, like a treasure hunter looking at a gold coin under a bright sky. “This won’t fly,” he said. And sure enough it didn’t.
Manuel,
Thank goodness! Who knows what disaster would have befallen you and your fellow passengers had it not been for the security officer’s keen eye? We should rest easy tonight knowing that the state’s agents are working tirelessly to protect us from any harm, no matter how implausible.
Maybe employees of the Dept of Homeland Security and their friends have all the cosmetic scissors, corkscrews, pen knives, and clippers that they can use in a lifetime (he said sarcastically).
Actually there is a serious point here. I only have anecdotal evidence from personal experience and that of others, but I’m under the distinct impression that theft from passenger bags, when under the control of their new US government employees running the show, has vastly increased.
This wouldn’t make the US any different from many countries. I recall years ago flying into Panama from Nicaragua (or the other way around, I can’t remember) and being told ahead of time that I had better put two cartons of cigs in my bag or else the government employees working for bag inspection will steal something else. Sure enough, the cartons were gone and those passengers who didn’t follow this street advise had other things stollen out of their bags.
Heh. That’s funny. A friend of mine went to Argentina and the only thing they took from his bag was a camera charger, even though (not sure why), he had a camera in the bag too.
Oh now here is an interesting idea: TSA turns to technology for airport security. One of the high-tech changes is that employees with look for bomb PARTS, not just whole bombs, in bags. Now that’s security!
They search and what happens comes from the unexpected.
I remember my luggage being searched in Rome when boarding a Kuwait Airlines plane.
The guard found what nobody had found before in the bottom of my toilet case : a very small knife. (He let me baord with it.)
A few days later Saddam invaded Kuwait.
They did not see him coming.
Jeffrey, they sell the loot on eBay.
I’m sorry, I only just got the reference. Now that they have all they want, we get to keep them. Got it. Gee, I’m slow sometimes.
