Imagine this 24″x36″. It is a good poster?

You mean like… a billboard?
It would be a poster to hang on the wall, framed or not.
It is nice. But I miss a more sophisticated poster/picture of Mises or Rothbard, like the ones you have on the walls at the institute, or the downloadable pictures on mises.org. They would look nice on my wall.
yes, those too are coming. We want to make sure that we offer super-high quality photos that will not degrade–archive quality.
Something more sophisticated than “the full collection” of t shirts would be more appealing.
ok good, that line will go.
Jeff, I think it’d be good to just have a full sized poster of Rothbard, Hayek, Mises, or whomever. People usually buy posters about a single person. Remember, these are the sorts of things that are going to go on dorm-room walls. They have to have a “hip” feel in order to draw people in. A series of t-shirts is certainly not ‘hip’, but some kind of well-designed Rothbard poster would.
I think it’s cool. The colors are striking, and the assortment/collection of thinkers is powerful. If I were a college student, I would much rather have this than a full color portrait of von Mises (no offense).
I’d like to offer some minor suggestions, if I may. I agree that the t-shirt collection line should go. The captions under each portait should also be uniform. Von Mises’ name is not mentioned, and Rothbard does not have his birth and death years. Listing the institute’s name and website on each portrait is slightly redundant. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly approve! I can just picture this hanging right above my bookshelf.
Jeffrey, I really like the poster idea in general.
But I think it should be less “blocky” and rigid looking and a little more free flowing and spontaneous; too many rectangles and hard edges.
Maybe a little more three-d effect and blurred edges.
Laying the “Austrian Economists” section on its side is a little annoying. Perhaps you could spell it from top to bottom instead.
Using curves and the golden mean in the layout could be good, and using a color wheel would be more pleasing and make it pop.
These suggestions along with some of the others may mean straying from the direct copying of the individual t-shirt designs and logo’s for a better integration.
Don’t sell the steak, sell the sizzle.
Mises needs his name and dates, Rothbard needs his dates. I really, really like the colors as-is. I also like the blocky geometry. It’s clean, clear, simple, and bold. No flashiness or hoo-ha needed. But as Peter suggested, consider re-working the sub-headings, particularly for Menger and Boehm-Bawerk.
For the sidebar: definitely eliminate the ‘t-shirt’ reference. I’d suggest replacing all the text in the sidebar with the Mises family shield and a simple “Mises.org” underneath.
Looks great, though.
I like it, but I might take off the part about tshirts for sale and emphasize the rest. mt
A general comment on the t-shirts: I like the Mises shirt best because it leaves more to others’ imagination. People see it on you, and they find it intriguing because of the Latin and the lack of explanation of who this is or what it’s about (so they ask you). The others explain themselves too much.
I like all the suggestions made so far. Especially about getting rid of the t-shirt reference and making each block the same format. I’ll probably buy one.
Jeff, I like the poster. I would hang it in my office. The above comments would not have been made if you had a decent selection of posters, IMHO. I say keep that poster but offer a poster of each economist with a saying under the image. Whoever is behind your marketing: you are a genius! You’re doing things that should have been done 10 years ago. I’m going to buy all your t-shirts. Thank you for doing such a great job! You are improving my life.
Jeff, when do we get to buy the poster? I printed out an 8.5″x11″, but I’d love a 24″x36″ to hang on my wall. Thanks.
Well, we finally found a printer that can do it in the quality we want and on a strong paper, in that large size. The first estimates we saw were completely impossible; it would have been unafforable. But enough looking and we think we have what we need. There are details to work out but it looks good overall, and at a good price ($10!) I wouldn’t be surprised to see this available in the first week of December. Thanks for asking! And thank you to everyone who helped improve it.
