Mises University Begins

July 31, 2005 by

For those of us privileged to work at the Mises Institute all year, this day, the first day of the Mises University, is always very special. We meet the new generation of intellectuals pouring in from all parts of the world. They gather for only one purpose: to immerse themselves completely in the study of economics in the Misesian mode. These 100+ students are selected from applications that come in all year. They meet each other in the knowledge that they all share in common a passion for a fundamental rethinking of economics and the social sciences, and have a special appreciation of the contribution of the Austrian tradition.

I’ve already met people from Sweden, Germany, Australia, Spain, Poland, Argentina, and all parts of the US–half undergrads and half grad students, mostly economics majors but many other fields are represented as well. The week is kicked off this evening with a lecture on the life and work of Ludwig von Mises by a scholar who knew him well: historian Ralph Raico, who is recognized as the world authority on classical liberalism.

This year has special significance: the 20th year of a program that has built the modern Austrian School in so many ways.

But first, a dinner reception, which begins in 10 minutes. The Raico lecture begins an hour later. Please join us by watching the webcast all week.
