Mises University Live!

July 31, 2005 by

For those who are unable to attend Mises University this week, join in from your computer. This year, all Mises University lectures will be available on the web via Mises.org’s Live Webcast.

It would be great if the lecture times were presented in different time zone formats, enabling those of us living in Europe to plan watching the lectures more easily.

I have the same problem, but I just set my computer time zone on US eastern time so I exactly know what time it is in Auburn.

Obviously I meant Central Time

The broadcast page says the lectures will be archived.

My problem is that the camera stays with the lecturers even when visual aids are presented instead of cutting to the visual aids. This results in there being no difference between or advantage to the video feed versus the audio feed. Given that the lecturers often do not explain the content of the visual aids, this error detracts from understanding.

From Chad Parish, when I asked about this same issue when viewing a lecture by Walter Block.

It is problematic to use our primary video camera in the way that you suggest, since I’ll lose continuity when I edit this video with the footage from a secondary camera (that is also videoing these sessions). This secondary camera records a wider view including Dr. Block and the projected overhead.

Since I can only use one camera for the video feed on the web, I had to choose between the wide view (in which the viewer cannot discern Dr. Block’s facial mannerisms) and the close-up view of the speaker (which limits the view of the information projected on the wall).

This problem could be more readily solved with an option that allows live video mixing with a laptop while it is encoding and webcasting, but I have not been able to find this sort of technology readily available. In the meantime, I’ve had to make the choice that seems to offer the best overall live product.
