UNLV Press Release re Hoppe/Economic Freedom

February 10, 2005 by

Press release. Not quite sure what the purpose of this is or what its odd language means, but it seems to indicate, at least, that UNLV is feeling the heat.

Coda: The text of the press release was also mailed by PublicAffairsOfficial@ccmail.nevada.edu to apparently all of the people who had emailed letters to UNLV about this case. I counted approximately 90-100 email addresses. This is a phenomenal effort, and a testament to the power of openly exposing noxious ideas and actions, and to the worldwide admiration for Hoppe.

I would urge anyone who has already sent an email to re-send it or a similar one, to all of the Board of Regents. We need to keep the pressure on. Board of Regents contact info here. The email addresses that are listed (not all are) are: tacres@rabbitbrush.com; mark_alden@uccsn.nevada.edu; jderby@unr.nevada.edu; dondero@nevada.edu; linda_howard@uccsn.nevada.edu; howardr@unr.nevada.edu; jackschofield@hotmail.com; seastrandd@eroomsystem.com; sisolak@aol.com; whipple.cpa@att.net

Indicate? Feeling the heat? All we seem to get from this is that a) they aren’t going to fire the Professor (and did you actually believe that was a potential? no wonder you were worried), b) it’s a confidential matter and thus somewhat irresponsible for the media to jump to conclusions based on the information it has, and c) Hoppe leaked information about this for political advantage against University conduct.

Now, if you desire to automatically distrust UNLV, then maybe Hoppe was threatened by being fired, the private process was letting liberals in the University ride rough shod over him, and he only retaliated in public relations so he could save his job. But otherwise, it looks like UNLV was taking standard non-extreme response to a student complaint, and Hoppe played it for all the media he could get.

Of course I automatically distrust UNLV, they are like most universities beholden to PC egalitarian leftism. Surely this is obvious. Further, from knowledge of the Hoppe case outside this press release, it’s clear they are in the wrong.

UNLV appears to have chosen to hide behind a cloak of secrecy in dealing with its attempt to discipline Professor Hans Hoppe for the comments he made regarding homosexuals and his claim that they have a tendency towards high time preference.

Many in the news media and many on the internet have chosen to raise questions with regard to the contractual “Academic Freedom” rights of Professor Hoppe and whether UNLV has over-stepped its bounds by attempting to discipline him for his remarks. UNLV simply says it will not discuss the matter. What next? Will UNLV claim National Security Concerns as a reason for not discussing the situation?

In my book, university campuses are supposed to be institutions where free and open discussions can be made, it thus seems almost bizarre that UNLV refuses to even discuss the disciplinary actions it has attempted to enforce against Hoppe.

This strikes one almost as an old Soviet Union type method where rulings are made and who know’s why? Sadly, if UNLV gets its way, all students will know about this situation is that Prof. Hoppe said homosexuals have high time preference and he was punished for it.

If there is more to the story UNLV, let’s here it.

Don’t hide behind the weak argument of protecting the student’s identity. We don’t want to know the student’s identity. We want to know why you are trying to discipline Prof. Hoppe.

To the UNLV officials responsible for putting out the above referenced press release, you should be embarrassed that you did so.

Frankly this press release looks to me like the Politically Correct Crowd getting caught with their pants down, and now they are trying to run for cover.

The third paragraph of the UNVL press release will be chilling to anyone who understands english and values liberty and freedom of expression. Reread it. This is the face of naked Totalitarianism.
