Inaugural Economics

January 20, 2005 by

Today will be one of the busiest days of the year for Washingtons Metro system, which will handle the bulk of the traffic going to and from President Bushs inauguration. Previous inaugurals have set one-day records for those years. Yet despite the surge in demand and the taxing of Metro resources, subway fares are actually being reduced for today. Metros traditional pricing structurestrictly controlled by the inter-government board that runs the systemcharges higher fares during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Today, however, Metro will charge off peak fares all day, an odd statement given that an inauguration is about as peak a day as the system can experience.

Maybe the transportation board had other goals in mind, besides maximizing revenue. Such as keeping as many people off the roads as possible.
