Mises University: Reduxed and Remixed

August 27, 2004 by

The following is a photomontage of various events that occurred during the August cohort of Mises University. Here are previous photos from the opening day (and the class photo from the June session). All errors, including blatant outright exaggerations, are mine.

Class photo.jpg

Where’s Waldo?

pat-tom-joe.jpg

Pat Barnett, the you’ve-got-questions-I-have-answers-secretary; Tom Datny, a senior at Arizona State University (from Joyzee); and Senior Fellow Joseph Salerno.

tucker-singing.jpg

Sinatra ain’t got nothin’ on LvMI’s very own, Jeff Tucker. Midway through the week, the veep made a no-holds-bar sing-a-thon conspicuously titled: Vienesse Songs from the Mises Circle. Then he breakdanced.

mises-ladies.jpg

A number of the lovely ladies (of Liberty) that participated in the cohort.

studying for test.jpg

While a number of us reluctantly volunteered for the difficult task of spreading Austrianism at local bars, these hardworking students pulled their own weight, by studying for the insanely hard, cry-your-eyes-out: Mündliche Prüfung; roughly translated: “dissertation oral examination.”

david-renzo-mark.jpg

David Skarbek, a senior at San Jose State University; Renzo Brun delo Re, a graduate of some small liberal arts school no one has ever heard of; Mark Anderson, a senior at Montana State University. Guess which one played football at Stanford?

what would mises order.jpg

What would Mises order?

team keynes.jpg

Team Keynes put the smack down on the Marginalists in an intense game of trivial pursuit. The winning question was, “What product-flop did Max Headroom originally endorse?”

law-alcohol.jpg

For shame! What kind of libertarians would put quotes around the “law” like that? Note: without laws, people would deface private property.

yorick.jpg

Yorick de Mombynes from Paris-Sorbonne University.

hoppe-speech.jpg

Comedy Hour, hosted by Hans “Hoppin” Hoppe included a number of belly aching knock, knock jokes that had everyone crying uncle. Though, I’m a bit partial to his, “So a Marxist, Keynesian and Austrian walk into a bar…”

hullsmann-apriori.jpg

Senior Fellow Guido H?n empirically proving a priorism with utilitarianism. What can’t he do?

food-buffalos.jpg

Saturday evening (8/7/2004) about 40 students and faculty patronized a local bar & grill called Buffalo’s. We dined like capitalist pig dogs, exploiting workers left and right, demanding clean silverware and refills. Then they unionized and went on strike.

auditorium.jpg

You are looking at the only air-conditioned, outdoor auditorium in the land known as Alabama. And you thought non-profits were not-creative.

auburn-university.jpg

Jonathan Dingel, a junior at Gonzaga University and Aaron Lee-Wudrick, a law student in Ottawa (ottawhat?) pose in a praxeologically correct manner. The Mises Institute is directly across the street from what locals refer to as their Graceland.

randall, adam, rich, neil.jpg

Randall McElroy, a senior at Georgia Tech and contributor at Catallarchy; Adam, a senior from Kettering University; Richelle Power and her husband Neal (both from Grand Valley State University).

eduardo, nadia, paolo.jpg

Eduardo Bonifficio, a graduate student from Switzerland; Nadia Krolikowski, a student from Brazil (Ipanema even); and Paolo Pamini, another graduate student from Switzerland. One thing we all learned from the Swiss, they’ll defend – to the death – their cheeses, watches, knives and most importantly golf-handicaps (keep practicing).

prem, anthony, audra.jpg

“I once read a book this big, it was called Man, Economy and State.”

justin, ben, matt, john.jpg

Justin Ptak, summer fellow from Harvard University; Ben Kilpatrick, an undergraduate at University of New Orleans; Matthew Cole, graduate of Washington University in St. Louis; John Payne, summer fellow and student at Wash U as well. They said something about swimming “old school style” and were last seen walking towards the city aquaduct.

polish guys.jpg

These chaps were part of the Polish contingent that visited the LvMI and operate the Polish Mises Institute (sans outdoor auditorium).

dan-emil.jpg

Dan ‘Third Times the Charm’ D’Amico, a summer fellow from George Mason University and Emil, a student at the London School of Economics (or maybe it was Oxford).

zealand-english.jpg

The guy on the left worked at the Commons Dorm and would stay up at night, listening to our half-brained (sometimes no-brained) schemes. He’s from New Zealand and pretended to care. The guy on the right is Barret Snipes, a student at the University of York and one of five to pass the Mundliche Prufung with honors.

hullsmann-soaked.jpg

Professor Hullsmann gave us a hands-on lecture regarding the tenants of democracy. We demonstrated (non-coercively of course) some of the unforseen consequences using a 50-gallon garbage can filled with water. Guess what failed.

constance-dude.jpg

Constance Brewster, senior at Jacksonville State University; and a dude whose name, rank and serial number I’m totally blank on, he was cool though.

james kimball.jpg

“I pity da foo who messes with James Kimball.” A summer fellow from Patrick Henry College.

lisa-aggh.jpg

Lisa Casanova, a environmental researcher at University of North Carolina; and well she’s going to bludgeon me for forgetting her name, however she does attend Wake Forest Law School.

someone-prem.jpg

Sumandro Chattapadhyay (?); and Prem Lee Barbosa, perhaps the youngest Austrian in the session, weighing in as a highschool senior from Florida.

zhang group.jpg

Front row: Emil; Linda Shrock Taylor; Jeffrey “Division of Labor” Zhang from Cornell University.
Back row: Karl Weis, senior at Loyola University – New Orleans, another guy whose name I forgot and Barrett.

institute.jpg

The Institute in the buff.

I’d like to thank Richelle Power, Constance Brewster, Linda Taylor and David Veksler for assisting me with these unsolicited photos.

5-second plug: If you are a student that enjoys economics, libertarianism and heckling statists, be sure to visit the Mises Institute during future events.

Great pix Tim. Fun for us who can’t be there.

Juan Fernando Carpio August 27, 2004 at 10:39 am

I see a couple of familiar faces (besides the professors of course). Maybe I will repeat the experience sometime too.

Regards from Quito, Ecuador

Barrett Snipes August 27, 2004 at 7:17 pm

Hey guys, great pics, but I’m not from U of York, I’m from East Carteret High. The guy you identify as Barrett is Cameron Carswell, who is in fact from U of York. Just thought I would fill you in on the minor detail…

Anthony Batty August 27, 2004 at 7:23 pm

Nice to see more photos of everyone, i’m the guy holding the books… and speaking of ‘Man, Economy and State’ i’m a third of the way through now!

I need to visit Brazil.

Tim Swanson August 27, 2004 at 8:03 pm

You’re fired Barrett, hand back the Mises Decoder Ring.

Richelle September 2, 2004 at 7:07 pm

How fascinating! Many thanks to Tim for pulling some of my pictures off my site — and giving me due credit! Thanks Tex!
Also, f.y.i., my husband, Neal, got his degrees from St. Martin’s College in Olympia, WA, not from Grand Valley.
Emil is finishing her MA in Economics from the University of Essex. Figured I’d help set the record straight!
