Terrorists Rule the Roost

August 4, 2004 by

You heard the warnings that terrorists could attack specific sites in Washington, Manhattan, and Newark. We are talking the stock exchange, Citigroup, the World Bank, and the IMF. Had it never occurred to anyone that these might be targets? No, we had to find that out by discovering secret memos. Thank goodness for our intelligence services! What attracted far less attention was the news that came out two days later: these warnings about specific attacks were years old. Next we’ll get the warning that the Japanese are going to attack Pearl Harbor, that the British are going to burn the capital, and that Indians are going to dump tea into Boston Harbor. As the elections get closer, there will be more “credible terrorist threats” and more highly armed security forces. The government will tell us that there is evidence, but that revealing the “evidence” would jeopardize their “operations”. “Experts” will be contracted to assess the information.

One also cannot dismiss Tom Ridge “postponing” the elections (indefinitely), especially if it appears that Kerry will win. The election comissioner will assure us that elections will be held just as soon as the polling booths can be secured. Months later they will say, “George Bush would have won anyway, so a vote would have been pointless.”

Demonstrators will be criticized by Talk Radio hosts and Fox news commentators as “disgruntled liberals” and “trouble makers” who do not take terrorist threats seriously. Some democratic representatives will (tepidly) denounce the delay in elections and urge them to be held “as soon as possible”. They will discourage “civil disobedience” and encourage “working within the system”. Public figures who do encourage civil disobedience will be arrested for “inciting violence”.

“Working within the system” will result in a lawsuit that works its way to the supreme court, which will decide that it is legal to delay the elections for overriding national security concerns….
