The Awful Truth about Republicans

March 25, 2004 by

Anyone who wants cuts in the size and scope of government should be concerned and frustrated with the policies of President George Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress. Government spending has increased enormously and the federal budget has plunged ever more into deficit. [MORE]

I believe that Dr.s Ekelund and Thornton have done a very good service in pointing out that the Republicans are returning to their roots. In a recent LRC article, I argued that there was a small (very small) hint of libertarianism in the 1980 Reagan campaign, but that it disappeared pretty quickly.

However, in defense of the Republicans, they were the ones who pointed out the dangers of deficits during the 1970s — and Democrats insisted at the time that anyone who mentioned deficits was doing so because he was a racist.

Something that we need to point out as well is that the Republicans were the ones who gave us the Progressive Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Democrats did not sign on until the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan in 1896. Now, I believe that Ekelund and Thornton are too easy on Bryan, who was a socialist through and through and wanted “free silver” because he believed it would create inflation, and thus bolster farmers’ incomes.

“Creditors finally obtaining the upper hand as opposed to debtors”

What exactly is wrong with that? Isn’t that what we’re trying to do now?

“these problems were caused by federal control of money and banking, which made currency extremely scarce and loans difficult to procure.”

How is that exactly? If the government banks were demanded above market interest, wouldn’t private individuals have been able to move in and lend their own wealth? Or did the farmers just want cheap money?

The late 19th century democrats were all about inflation for “the litte guy”. Not that the Republicans were all that much better, but still, your idols are as tarnished.
